While construction on Memorial Drive between Manitowoc and Two Rivers is ongoing, the main walking and biking path should stay open.
Two Rivers City Manager Greg Buckley explained on WOMT’s Be My Guest program that the Mariners Trail will be open most of the time.
“With the exception of when it is torn up because they (the state) are replacing a segment of culvert or pipe underneath it,” he explained. “And it is to be promptly re-graveled and then asphalt to be put down within 72 hours.”
When the trail isn’t usable, Buckley says a worker with a flag will help people get to where they want to go.
He says the city wants to ensure the Maritime Marathon and the Cool City Car Cruise can go off without a hitch.
Buckley also says the detour is scheduled to end by Memorial Day, but paving will continue.
“From Memorial Day forward, any paving work will be done with partial closures and flagging,” he noted. “So, we’ve all run into that. You come up on a strip where the paving machines are working, and it might slow you down as it narrows to one lane.”
The project costs about $6 million and will be entirely funded through the state.
The Memorial Drive project will include a new overlay and culvert replacement.
Drivers are being detoured onto Highway 310 to get into the city.
