Yet another scam has been reported, this time in Fond du Lac County.
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office received numerous reports over the weekend of a jury duty scam targeting residents over the phone.
Much like other scams reported in Northeastern Wisconsin, scammers used a spoofed phone number to make it appear that the call was coming from the Sheriff’s Office Communications Center’s non-emergency number.
If a potential victim answered the call the scammer would then falsely inform them that they have missed jury duty.
They would also tell them that they must pay fines or risk facing jail time for contempt of court with some victims even being told to report to the Sheriff’s Office in person.
Authorities are confirming that this is indeed the work of scammers.
Law enforcement officials or court employees will never contact residents requesting personal information or payments over the phone.
These types of court summons or failure-to-appear notices are always sent through the mail.
Any individual who receives such a call that seems suspicious is urged to reach out to their local police department or sheriff’s office for assistance.
