The Manitowoc Public School District is getting ready to offer heart screenings for its students.
The District’s Nursing has partnered with the non-profit Who We Play For to offer the three days of screenings at Manitowoc Lincoln High School.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of death on school campuses-more than any form of cancer, concussion, or illness combined.
Thousands of seemingly healthy kids die every year due to detectable heart conditions. Students in grades 6 through 12 are invited to have their heart checked with an electrocardiogram (ECG)on May 13th or 15th between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. or on May 17th between 10:00 and 1:00 p.m.
MPSD school nurses will be conducting the tests that take about 5 minutes to complete at a cost of $20.
ECG tests at a medical office typically cost in the hundreds of dollars out of pocket.
Registration will be announced and opened to families very soon, and it takes less than 3 minutes to complete.
Because the parental consent is completed during the registration, parents are not required to accompany their child to the screening event.
