Manitowoc County’s Sheriff is acknowledging a special week for law enforcement.
This week is National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, which recognizes dispatchers who take phone calls from people calling 911.
Sheriff Dan Hartwig explained on WOMT’s Be My Guest that the department is very appreciative of them because of how critical they are with helping save countless lives on a daily basis.
“They’re the communication link,” he said. “I always like to refer them (as), they are the initial first responder. They’re the ones getting the calls or the notification in dispatch to send emergency services whether it would be fire, EMS or law enforcement to whatever emergency is happening in our community.”
The weeklong event was set up in 1981 by Patricia Anderson of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office in California as a way to celebrate and thank those who dedicate their lives to serving the public.
According to the Manitowoc County Joint Dispatch Center, they had over 70,000 calls a year before 2020.
