The Department of Homeland Security has extended the deadline for Americans to get a Real I-D into 2023.
Tuesday’s announcement gives Wisconsin residents until May 3rd of that year.
The previous deadline was just five months from this weekend – October 1st.
Federal officials say it was becoming clear that many people couldn’t meet that deadline because the coronavirus pandemic has made it hard for states to issue the new licenses.
The Real I-D Act was passed 15 years ago.
It was set up to establish minimum security standards for all state-issued driver’s licenses and I-D cards based on a recommendation from the 9-11 Commission.
Right now, only 43-percent of all driver’s licenses and identification cards are compliant.
