While the Cubs and Cardinals are beating up on each other this weekend in Wrigley Field, the Milwaukee Brewers have a chance to take sole possession of first place in the National League Central Division.
Milwaukee and Chicago are currently tied, three games ahead of St. Louis.
The Brewers open a weekend home series against the last-place Pittsburgh Pirates tonight (June 11th) at 7:10 p-m with Brandon Woodruff taking the mound for Milwaukee.
The Brewers have won 11 of their last 13 games and just took a series in Cincinnati two-out-three.
Jace Peterson drove in three runs and first baseman Daniel Vogelbach ripped a two-run homer in the 7-2 decision Thursday afternoon while Brent Suter got the win..
Brewers manager Craig Counsell isn’t optimistic that his starting third baseman will return to the lineup any time soon.
After Travis Shaw left Thursday’s game with a dislocated shoulder Counsell told reporters: “It’s not going to be a couple of days.”
He says another player will have a chance to step up.
At first, it looks like that’s going to be Luis Urias, who lost his starting shortstop job when the team traded for Willy Adames.
To take Shaw’s place on the roster Milwaukee called up reliever Patrick Weigel who has already pitched four innings previously this season, striking out an impressive nine batters and giving up a pair of earned runs.
