Members of the Wisconsin Assembly are debating bills that would ban transgender athletes from taking part in girls’ and women’s sports.
Opponents call the measures discriminatory and unnecessary. The five hours of debate scheduled by assembly leaders got underway Wednesday – right in the middle of gay pride month. Democratic Governor Tony Evers is expected to veto the bills even if they are passed. Evers has pledged to stand with transgender students.
If they make it through the Assembly, the bills would still have to pass the Wisconsin Senate before they would make it to Evers’ desk.
