Firefighters arrived at a home in Athens Sunday to find no fire, but a man was breaking windows on the home’s second floor.
Then, after Marathon County deputies entered the home, Steven Mattfield barricaded himself in a room and started a fire.
Deputies say Mattfield jumped out a window after getting the fire started and was taken into custody.
He’s in jail facing charges of arson and recklessly endangering safety.
The fire spread and caused heavy damage to the home.
It’s considered a total loss.
