It’s become a familiar sound in Mishicot these days as multitudes of police, fire, and ambulance vehicles escorted the Mishicot Indians Girls Softball Team into town yesterday (June 29th) following their 6 to 3 victory over the Juda-Albany Panthers in the WIAA Division Four State Girls Softball Championship game at King Park on the campus of the University of Green Bay.
It’s the Indians’ first title in program history in their fourth trip under Head Coach Dawn Shimek. It’s also only the second gold ball in the Mishicot trophy case, with the other earned only four months ago by the Girls Basketball team.
Senior Shortstop Abby Garceau had three hits and recorded the final out in the title tilt and knocked in the game-winner in the Indians’ Semi-final win over Phillips.
“I’m just so proud of this team,” she told Seehafer News. “There really is no better way to go out. I’m living everyone’s dream right now.”
Senior Center Fielder Kally Kreuger was the point guard on Mishicot’s state Girls Basketball Team and spoke about a never say die attitude. She put it bluntly, “Honestly that’s just Mishicot Softball. We never give up.”
Senior Maddie Willems this championship truly belongs to the Mishicot community.
“It was kinda sad we only had 300 tickets. I know for a fact if we had more tickets they would have been gone like that,” she said. “The people talking the time out of a Tuesday, during the day…to watch us really means a lot, and really shows how this community comes together.”
Senior Catcher Taylor Weger says the defense was key to winning a title, noting that Maddy Dokey is an amazing 3rd baseman.
“Her defense really saved us all the time,” she said. “I’m so proud of her.”
She also praised the work of the rest of the seniors who were able to go out on top.
Dokey, also a Senior, said she embraces being a small part of something much bigger than softball.
“I came from a big school,” she explained. “I transferred here my freshman year for softball, and to be a part of something that so many people come together for…is amazing.”
Mishicot finishes its season 27 and 3 while the Panthers of Juda-Albany finish at 18 and 7.
