A record number of people attended the 11th annual “Gumby’s Club Fore a Cure” fundraiser earlier this month to benefit cancer victims and their families.
In 2021 checks have been mailed to 46 local families affected by cancer thanks to the generosity of many, but there’s one moment that founder Rob “Gumby” Roseff says he’ll never forget.
He called WOMT’s Be My Guest last week when Manitowoc Police Chief Nick Reimer was Lee Dougals’ guest and told a story from that weekend.
Roseff said he and his wife were in their car riding on the route of the “Glow Walk and Run” making sure the nearly 300 participants were ok.
They were approached by a Manitowoc Police Officer at an Intersection crossing on Reed Avenue, who asked “Are you Gumby?”
“I said, ‘Yes I am.'” Gumby explained. “He reached into his back pocket and handed me a very nice donation. He told me that he had cancer years ago and wanted to thank me for what we were doing. I was so overcome with emotion I started crying thinking that this police officer was so kind to do that. It’s unbelievable. He’s a true hero.”
Chief Reimer reacted, saying, “I think it’s human nature to sometimes dwell on the worst instead of being thankful for the positive things people are doing in this community.”
The name of the Officer or the amount of the donation was undisclosed.
Gumby adds “There’s a ton of great officers out there and what a great community we live in. Thanks to everyone who make this great event that benefits so many possible.”
Prior to this year “Gumby’s Club For A Cure” has donated over $281,000
