More is now known regarding the cause and the number of customers affected by a mid-afternoon power outage in the city of Manitowoc.
Cynthia Carter, Senior Manager Business Services for Manitowoc Public Utilities, explained their power plant experienced an electrical disturbance at the Lakefront Substation about 3:00 PM Monday (July 19th) causing both operating boilers and turbines to be removed from service.
Carter says approximately 4,400 electric customers lost power as a result.
Customers in the vicinity of the power plant likely heard a “steam blow” sound coming from the plant which was actually steam being safely vented from the boilers, as designed, while the turbines were not operating.
Power was re-routed from other substations and was restored to all customers by 6:00 PM last evening.
Electric generation from the plant was back in service at around 7:00 PM.
