Manitowoc’s Committee of the Whole voted 8 to 2 last night (Monday) to recommend the full City Council vote on returning two-way traffic to 8th, 10th, and 11th Streets.
Mayor Justin Nickels says a good lengthy discussion took place with approximately 12 to 15 people speaking during Public Input all in support of the change –including a business owner on 10thStreet.
“Balance On Buffalo recently remodeled their façade. It’s a beautiful building but you never see it traveling on 10th Street. If you go two way the business owner’s support is validated by people seeing it more often.”
A listener texted into today’s WOMT Radio Be My Guest Program on the possibility of putting it up for a referendum. Nickels says that’s a fair question.
He states, “We elect representatives to gather all the information and make an educated decision. Referendums often become a popularity contest with slogan to either vote yes or no with no data behind it.”
The Common Council will vote on the change at next month’s regularly scheduled meeting on August 16th. A complete report can be viewed at Manitowoc.org under the Community Development Department. If approved the change would take effect in August of 2022.
