Manitowoc takes a 10-and-4 record into today’s American Legion Varsity Baseball Regional Tournament at Wildwood Park in Sheboygan.
Legion Post-88 will see its’ 1st action tonight (July 21st) at 7:30 against the winner of the game between Fond du Lac and Menomonee Falls.
Those two teams square-off in the tourney opener at 2:30 this afternoon.
That’ll be followed at 5: 00 PM by the host team (Sheboygan) facing Cedarburg.
We spoke with Legion baseball Coach Stan Dietrich, who spoke on getting a 1st round bye in the double-elimination tournament. He said he wasn’t sure how that is determined, but, he called a first-round bye “very beneficial, but we have to take advantage of that and make it work.”
Dietrich and his staff have a nice mix of local and area athletes including five players from Manitowoc Lincoln, four from Manitowoc Lutheran, two from Brillion and Hilbert, and one each from Roncalli and Kiel. Despite some of the players competing against each other during the High School season, Dietrich said this team has “worked out really well.”
And, as a coach of various sports over the years including a lot of baseball experience, Stan says “We’ve got a really good team. They are very respectful kids. They play hard, and bring a little bit of an edge, which is good.”
Dietrich also likes the flexibility of his roster, utilizing those 15 players in various roles while giving all of them playing time this summer.
