Authorities say a retired Jefferson County firefighter has died in a Tuesday afternoon home explosion.
The victim’s name hasn’t been released.
Emergency responders were called to the location in the Town of Rome at about 2:00 p-m.
Witnesses say the debris field covered an area of about a full city block.
Western Lakes Fire District Chief Brad Bowen says people living in a two-block area around the destroyed home were evacuated.
A natural gas leak may have caused the explosion.
The dead man was the only person inside the home and no other injuries were reported.
