Manitowoc County Emergency Services will be conducting the first of two emergency response exercises with the Point Beach Nuclear Plant tonight and tomorrow.
Emergency Services Director Travis Waack says the County will be opening a simulated evacuee Reception Center at the Manitowoc County Highway Shop and activating its Emergency Operations Center. Waack adds the public may see various emergency response teams out in the field or a number of state and federal vehicles in the area during the exercise. Federal regulations require local and state government agencies whose jurisdictions are home to nuclear power plants to biennially demonstrate they can protect the health and safety of people living within ten miles of the plant in the event of an emergency.
He reminds citizens to not be alarmed as events are taking place are just a drill and not really saying “participating in these exercises makes us better prepared as a community to respond to a wide variety of disaster scenarios.” The evaluated exercise takes place on the evening of September 13th and the day of the 14th.
Seehafer Broadcasting and Holy Family Memorial will also participate.
