The Northeast Wisconsin Regional Director of the Better Business Bureau urged caution be taken should area residents be contacted about alleged IRS Grant scams. Susan Bach of Appleton tells us those types of scams are always a problem, but “It seems like we have seen an uptick in scammers impersonating government entities like the IRS, Social Security Administration, things like that.”
Bach explains that as a consumer the key thing to know is being able to tell the difference between a legitimate call and a scammer. The IRS is not going to reach out to you, call you, email or text you to let you know there’s a problem with your IRS refunds or you’re going to receive some kind of grant,” she said. “They’re not going to call you and do that, they’re probably going to start communication with you by a regular snail-mail.
The Better Business Bureau spokeswoman advises “anytime somebody calls you out of the blue, unexpectedly, claiming to be a government agency it’s probably a scam.”
