People that live in our neck of the woods aren’t naïve or delusional. They’re well aware of the fact that when winter rolls around, it’s not going to make a quick visit and then head off with its frigid tail between its legs. When winter descends in Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan, it’s here for the long haul. We know how Mother Nature works her charms and by-and-large we proceed accordingly without too many complaints.
That doesn’t mean, however, that we don’t need a break in the action every once and a while. A little diversion serves to remind us that there’s more to life than shoveling snow, scraping windshields, and layering our apparel to retain as much body heat as possible.
With that in mind, Manitowoc Public Library has a humdinger of diversion coming up for our community on Saturday, February 12, at 6 PM—Flair in the Air: An Aerial Extravaganza with Cycropia! In case you aren’t familiar with Cycropia, let me fill you in on some details in order to pass along what a phenomenal evening awaits.
Cycropia is an aerial dance company based out of Madison, Wisconsin. They’re amazing! Their fantastical performance is a spectacular combination of acrobatics, gymnastics, dance, and amazing visuals. If you’d like to see for yourself before heading to MPL for their performance, go to their website—www.cycropia.org. There are a number of video clips that will amply demonstrate that I’m not exaggerating.
Truth be told—I kind of buried the lead. Because believe it or not, I didn’t mention that the show on February 12 is absolutely FREE! That’s right: a performance that transforms the Library’s First Floor into an exquisite dreamscape staging area will be available to our community with no entrance fee whatsoever. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Jeremiah and Rebecca Novak/Novak’s Service Center, all one needs to do to be treated to a free flight of fantasy is to show up at MPL at 6 PM on Saturday, February 12. And this is a family-friendly evening, so it’s a spectacular event for dreamers of all ages. Please note, though, that children under the age of 8-years old must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
But, wait! There’s more! The Cycropia performance isn’t the only free element in this evening. Manitowoc’s Kaleidoscope Dance Studio will also be presenting a pair of performance pieces. And as if that wasn’t enough to tempt you into MPL the evening of February 12, there will be complimentary sample refreshments available provided by PetSkull Brewing Company (for those in attendance over the age of 21), Courthouse Pub, and Mara’s Café. No reservations are required, but if you’d like to check out all the details an additional time, click over to www.facebook.com/events/506689120644704. It’s all true—we promise!
If you couldn’t tell, we’re incredibly excited to be hosting Crycropia once again at Manitowoc Public Library. This is the second time that they’ll be performing their aerial extravaganza at MPL. The last time was at a fundraiser almost four years ago. Obviously, it won’t be the same show, but there’s an even bigger difference—this time, it’s FREE! And who doesn’t like free?
One thing I mention to people all the time is that MPL is so much more than just books. There are so many different methods to reach and inspire people beyond books (not that books aren’t great!). Our mission statement puts forth the notion that through MPL’s services, “we strive to foster an environment that meets the educational, recreational and cultural needs of the community.” If our evening with Cycropia et al. doesn’t hit all three of those principles, it’s difficult to say what would! And the Library is a nice big space with plenty of room to appropriately distance and enjoy the performance. While masks are not mandatory, they are strongly encouraged!
So, set some time aside and prepare yourself for some visual wizardry as MPL presents “Flair in the Air with Cycropia” on Saturday, February 12, at 6 PM. We can’t wait to see you at the Library!
