A brief, but very meaningful and unifying moment occurred for players, coaches and fans from two schools separated by only a few miles.
It happened at the middle of the court at Roncalli High School where the Jets had just defeated lakeshore rival Two Rivers in boys’ basketball last night.
Jets head coach Joe Garceau told Seehafer News it was to show support to Two Rivers after a sophomore student died as the result of a medical emergency Tuesday at the high school.
“It’s the least we could do; I was getting choked up. It wasn’t really planned, I just asked [Two Rivers’ head coach] Coach Linzmeier if he minds praying. If they wanted it, I’d leave it up to them. He said that they wouldn’t mind doing it,” Garceau added.
“Sometimes we focus a lot on winning a basketball game. I had a couple of moments throughout the year where I told the guys that there are bigger things out there.”
Like the tragedy this week in the Two Rivers community, Garceau explained that it also makes you realize that the things you think are important are not that big of a deal.
“We want to come out there and compete as a team, as a brotherhood, and try to do our best together, but there are bigger things out there.”
The 14-year-old boy’s death in Two Rivers remains under investigation.
