Crops in the Lakeshore area are doing well.
Steve Hoffman with In-Depth Agronomy says instead of the old adage of corn being knee-high by the 4th of July, it is normally closer to waist-high in this area.
“Farmers in the area got a bit of a late start planting this year, but when that window opened they really made good progress and we’re almost catching up on that late start,” Hoffman explained. “I’d say overall our crops are looking pretty good.”
Weather is always a major factor for crop farming and Hoffman says it hasn’t been too bad this year.
Hoffman said, “It has been hotter than normal as everybody knows, that can have a bad effect on crops if it doesn’t come along with some rain, and luckily we’ve been getting a little bit here and there.”
Farming is a major industry in Manitowoc County, and contributes significantly to the local economy.
