A local veteran’s organization is once again asking for help in cleaning the numerous civil war veteran grave markers in Manitowoc’s Evergreen Cemetery.
Save the Veterans will be in the cemetery at 9:00 a.m. on October 1st as they continue their goal of cleaning up all 230 civil war gravestones in the local cemetery.
The group started their venture last year and was able to knock out 25 gravesites thanks to some help from the public.
Among the gravestones cleaned was that of PVT Milo Schofield.
He was a member of the 5th WI Infantry, Company I.
Born in Vermont in 1828, PVT Schofield enlisted in the Army in 1861, and died in 1904 at the age of 76.
Very little additional information is known about PVT Schofield.
If you would like to help clean up the grave sites of other Civil War Veterans, you are encouraged to simply show up.
The group will gather at the Grand Army of the Republic marker, which is centrally located.
Participants under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign the waiver.
Waivers can also be found online at manitowoc.org/EvergreenCemetery by clicking on Volunteer Forms.
