Mishicot Junior Katelyn Callahan has accomplished a lot in her first two years of playing High School Softball for the Indians.
She is the reigning two-time Big East player of the year and as a freshman, she led the Indians in home runs, runs batted in, and extra-base hits as Mishicot captured their first and only state championship in 2021.
Recently, Katelyn announced that she has committed to play for the Northern Iowa Panthers, a Division One program near her childhood home of Cedar Rapids.
But it was a decision that was made with a heavy heart.
Katelyn’s father, Robert passed away July 30th while watching his daughter at a softball tournament for her club team, the Kenosha Lightning, in Myrtle Beach South Carolina.
The Callahan’s resided just an hour from the Northern Iowa campus as a youngster, which Katelyn says played a huge factor but what clinched it (her decision) was that during her official visit they gave her jersey number 13.
Her father wore 31 during his collegiate career at the University of Maine and when she put in on, she said she felt an instant connection to her dad.
Katelyn has been promised that number 13 will be waiting for her in two years, and she adds that it will be like having her dad “right there with her” Katelyn and her mother are expected to move back to Iowa following the 2024 season.
She adds that it’ll be extra special to have her mother in the stands supporting her.
