February is American Heart Month, and with it comes some good news for egg lovers.
Eggs are good, not just for your heart, but for overall body health.
Besides being protein and nutrient-rich, eggs are high in unsaturated fats that help lower bad cholesterol.
Registered dietician, consultant, and author Amy Goodson recently shared the numerous ways eggs are beneficial not only to our hearts but to our bodies overall.
“One of the key contributors to cholesterol is a high intake of saturated fat,” she explained while on the WCUB Breakfast Club. “The great news is that most of the fat found in eggs is that unsaturated, good for you fat that supports heart health.”
Despite what you may have heard, Goodson says we should NOT avoid the yolk.
In fact, that’s where most of the benefits lie.
Goodson explained that “Half of the high-quality proteins found in eggs is in the yolk, as well as most of the vitamins and minerals that are essential for our brains and our bodies.”
Goodson went on to add ways that eggs benefit both adult and developing brains.
“Choline is a nutrient that actually supports brain health, including memory, thinking, mood, and more,” she explained. “Eggs also contain some key nutrients, like Vitamin D12 and Iodine the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend for those growing brains and bodies.”
For those who spend a lot of time looking at Blue Screens, the combination of lutein and zeaxanthin found in eggs can help protect your eyes from potentially damaging blue light.
