The subject of a lot of debate on tv, radio, and online is the role that medications play in public health.
Currently, the United States has more people on meds than any other industrialized nation.
Recently Joseph Radich, physician assistant and founder of R3 Health and Med House in Florida, joined the WCUB Breakfast Club to discuss the issue.
Radich says a big reason for the uptick in physical and emotional ailments that Americans are facing is the increase in unhealthy lifestyles.
“Our society, through media and marketing tricks and strategies conditions us to lead a very unhealthy lifestyle,” he told host Craig Dillon. “Health care, unfortunately, has become this disease management and it really doesn’t take into account lifestyles of the individual. So, unless you’re proactive about your health, you’re just going to continue to be sick and fall victim to the system.”
Radich also went on to point out the alarming number of children on medication for conditions like ADHD, anxiety, and type 2 diabetes.
“Look at child obesity rates right now. They haven’t been conditioned by mainstream media, so how are they getting so sick so young? It’s a product of lifestyle,” he said. “It’s a product of just, everything and that’s where we have to change. We have to educate ourselves on healthy habits, and the easy strategies we can implement as individuals to make sure we don’t fall down that bad path.”
Radich also added one of the easiest ways to combat the problem at the ground level is by implementing a healthy lifestyle.
That includes regular exercise, a balanced diet including fruits and vegetables, and cutting out or at least limiting added sugar, especially when it comes to soda.
