Due to declining birth rates and an aging population, Froedtert Holy Family Memorial Hospital will soon end its obstetrics and gynecology programs, offering gynecology services exclusively.
In a statement from the health network, officials said a continued decline in area births means the hospital will no longer be able to sustain the volume required to provide safe, high-quality care beyond June 1st, at which time the final baby will be delivered in the birth center.
Tom Veeser, RN and interim President at Holy Family Memorial, said “This has been a difficult and emotional decision, but one that ensures we are able to provide the best, safest level of care possible to our parents, long term.”
HFM is working with healthcare partners in the region to safely transition care for local women who are currently pregnant and those who may become pregnant.
Staff and providers affected by the change are being offered alternative positions within the organization.
It was stated in the news release that nearly 60% of the population in and around Manitowoc County is over the age of 40, significantly higher than the national average.
