After a busy week on the Senate floor, Senator Devin LeMahieu checked in to give a brief synopsis on the WCUB Breakfast Club.
LeMahieu addressed the recent retirement of Secretary of State Doug LeFollette being immediately followed by Governor Tony Evers appointing a new Secretary of State.
He says with three years and 9 months remaining on LeFollette’s term at the time of his retirement, he was disappointed with the governor not holding a special election.
“We actually passed a resolution on the floor last week to call on the governor for a special election, but we cannot compel him to do that,” the Senate Majority Leader explained. “It is up to the governor to do that. I think he is going to probably stand his ground and stay with his appointment rather than let the people of Wisconsin decide who the Secretary of State is.”
There were also approximately 10-12 bills taken up by the senate last week, some of them having to do with public safety.
One of the big ones had to do with defining what carjacking is, as currently in Wisconsin there is no legal definition of carjacking.
Another bill that passed sought to increase charges in reckless homicide cases, particularly those involving drug dealers lacing their narcotics with Fentanyl causing lethal overdoses.
