Many in Manitowoc are curious about what’s happening with the property that was home to the former Mid Cities Mall.
Mayor Justin Nickels tells Seehafer News that efforts are being made to possibly purchase it from current owner Steve Elkind of Madison.
“We did authority from the Council to reach out to the owner to talk about what it would take for the city to purchase it,” he explained. “Without sharing any details of those closed-door conservations, I don’t think the Council, certainly myself, don’t have the appetite necessary to go to the taxpayer. I don’t think they would be thrilled about that at this time.”
Nickels says there is at least some proverbial silver lining in the clouds.
“The TIF District that it is in with the Bayshore Clinic and the whole Bayshore Development is now generating real tax dollars to hopefully support short or long-term development,” he revealed. “I’m guessing that’s the next step the Elk’s Club site is filling up and the next logical step would be to expand towards the Mid Cities site.”
The Mayor added that it’s anybody’s guess as to what would possibly be developed there, but the logical step, in his opinion, would be to utilize it for multi and single-family homes.
Nickels reiterates that he doesn’t foresee anything happening anytime soon.
