The Manitowoc Lincoln Boys Baseball team received two impressive pitching performances Saturday in the sweep of a doubleheader against Pulaski.
What was even more impressive is how Ships parents responded in getting Municipal Field ready to play on short notice.
The twin-bill was scheduled to be hosted by the Red Raiders, but snow on Monday and steady rain all week long made their diamond unplayable.
Manitowoc’s field was playable but showers in the forecast Friday night and Saturday morning made the switch a bit of a challenge.
Lincoln head coach Bruce Steinbecker said planning for the possible switch actually went into motion last Monday.
He explained they were “Looking at the forecast, looking at the weather, paying attention to little things like cutting the grass when it’s sunny out and getting things done before the (inclement) weather comes in. My coaching staff, our parents, our players we spend hours and hours on the fields making sure we have a chance to play and kind of stay one step ahead of the game.”
With showers still in the forecast Friday night and early Saturday, Steinbecker said they took action and the response was pretty amazing.
“We sent out a message saying anybody with tarps can you help out with the field and we had a bunch of people show up at 7:00 [Friday] night, jumped on the field to put tarps on and they’re all coming back this morning to take ‘em off, all because they want their sons to play baseball today,” he explained.
After removing the tarps and draining the water on them, the Ships went on to take both ends of the doubleheader to stay in the thick of the FRCC title chase with four games scheduled this week, 3 of them on the road.
