The students at Jefferson Elementary School in Manitowoc will come back to class in the fall even more excited for recess.
That is because the Manitowoc Public School District has hired Nexus Solutions to install a brand-new turf playground.
We spoke with Chris Dupre the Buildings and Grounds Director for the District, who told us the current playground just isn’t optimal for play.
“The current situation is they have way to many kids to have grass and grow it,” he explained. “There was blacktop previously, then they raised money to put in the grass…This is going to be a great addition.”
We also spoke with Brent Warren, the Project Manager for Nexus, and he explained how it is similar to the turf that was recently installed at Ron Rubik Municipal Field.
“This is going to be a system that drains water really well with the synthetic turf,” he noted. “It could be done raining five minutes before, and you could have the kids out there. That will be a game changer for recesses for them.”
This $453,000 project is being done in conjunction with a $195,000 boiler replacement happening at the school.
Warren noted that the current boilers are from the 90s, and will save the school on energy costs moving forward.
