An estimated 500 runners will be in town Sunday for the 11th annual Maritime Marathon, sponsored by Froedtert, The Medical College of Wisconsin, and Holy Family Memorial.
Race committee member, Mike Cavanaugh, tells Seehafer News that competitors in all events are coming to Manitowoc County from 20 different states.
The picturesque race route remains the same, leaving the UW-Green Bay Manitowoc Campus at 7:00 Sunday morning and following the lakefront to downtown, the Mariners Trail north to Two Rivers and the Rawley Point Trail to Port Sandy Bay and the midway point turnaround, before the runners return to the UW campus.
There’s a brief pre-race ceremony beginning at 6:50 a.m. with the national anthem and introductions ahead of the Boston Marathon qualifier.
Race signup will take place Saturday from 10:00 until 4:00 p.m. at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum.
Spectators are encouraged along the course.
For those who would still like to volunteer during Sunday’s race can go to the Maritime Marathon Facebook page or to MaritimeMarathon.org.
All aid stations will be staffed by nonprofit organizations and event proceeds go to those charities.
Cavanaugh stated since the marathon began here in 2012, over $160,000 has been donated to local charitable groups.
