Construction on the 21st Street Bridge along the Manitowoc River may bring a headache to many drivers, but historians are excited to share the interesting history the bridge has.
The bridge was first built as a swing bridge at 10th Street in 1872 and again reinforced in 1899.
It was then moved in 1920 to make way for a new bascule bridge to take its place on 10th Street.
After the original bridge was moved, it eventually was replaced in 1950 which now serves as the 21st Street bridge our community uses every day.
It is expected that the much-needed renovations will be completed by the end of July and will ensure that the historic bridge can remain standing and in use for many years to come.
Thank you to Steve Olson for supplying us with the historical information about the bridge many of us use on a regular basis.
