Today (June 16th) was the United Way of Manitowoc County hosted its annual “Day of Action”.
Volunteers participated in the hands-on event to help serve non-profits in the community.
Executive Director of United Way, Ashley Bender, spoke on the importance of the annual tradition, saying “It helps expand the capacity of getting things done and helping our non-profits tackle some projects that maybe they can’t get to in their day-to-day mission work.”
Volunteers for the Day of Action met outside United Way’s office to kick off the day before departing for their project.
The different location opportunities for volunteering included Ascend Services, Crossfire Ranch, Lakeshore Humane Society, Manitowoc County Historical Society, and United Way.
At Ascend, volunteers cleaned transport vehicles and assisted with yard work.
One of those volunteers, Diane Stewart, explained what made her want to participate.
“I’m big on volunteering, I enjoy it. I’m always looking for different opportunities,” she told Seehafer News. “When I had seen the different areas that I had to choose from I liked the idea of Ascend and I figured I’d come here.”
United Way reaches out to local non-profits to structure their “Day of Action” and encourages local businesses to participate together.
Erin Thomas and Taisa Belinski went to Ascend together as co-workers at Nicholet Bank, along with Belinski’s daughter to take part.
Belinski told us they all got an email inviting them to participate.
“I immediately was like ‘Yeah, I’ll do it’,” she recalled. “I wanted to get my daughter out and show her that getting out into the community and helping people is a good thing to do.”
