Summer season means a busy time for thunderstorms across Wisconsin, which also means an increased risk of a lightning strike if you’re spending more time outdoors.
June 20 is Lightning Safety Awareness Day in the state, and ReadyWisconsin is urging everyone to be more aware of safety practices when there is lightning nearby.
The Department of Military Affairs (DMA) explains that “Even if the sky directly overhead may be clear, lightning can travel several miles from the center of a storm. If thunder can be heard, lightning is close enough to strike nearby”.
They state that the safest place to find shelter is in a “sturdy, enclosed structure” and away from open areas and bodies of water.
If you are in a car, you are advised to avoid touching metal.
If you witness a person struck by lightning, immediately call 911 and begin CPR.
The victim will not hold an electric charge, so DMA notes that it is safe to help them.
