The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources wants to remind Wisconsinites to put safety first this summer.
Drowning can happen to even the most experienced swimmers and nearly 80% of fatal boating incidents involve drowning.
Alcohol use is a leading factor in recreational boating fatalities so if alcohol is involved in your day of boating, make sure to have a designated operator as operating a boat is no different than driving a car.
The easiest and most important thing to remember is to boat sober and wear life jackets.
Along with wearing a life jacket, remember that river shorelines and sandbars pose unseen dangers.
It is also important to keep an eye on the weather before going out and let someone know when and where you are going.
