Year after year, people across the country celebrate Independence Day with many parties, activities, and fireworks.
However, ReadyWisconsin urges everyone to prioritize safety. The focus is fireworks, as they can cause severe burns and fires.
Last year alone there were 107 emergency room visits in Wisconsin for fireworks-related injuries, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.
Remember to obey local laws, always use fireworks outside, always stay at least 35 feet away, and never light multiple fireworks at once.
Also, remember those pets.
Most animals do not enjoy the sound or sight of fireworks and keeping them inside and distracted will help make the event less stressful.
If spending the day in the pool or lake to avoid the heat, make sure you always wear plenty of sunscreen (which means reapplying every two hours), swim with a friend or an adult, and check those weather conditions.
Traveling outdoors?
Make sure to pack an emergency kit with plenty of food and water, keep grills at least three feet away from your house, and NEVER leave people or pets in a parked car.
Temperatures can rise to extreme levels very quickly.
