Tree cleanup from last week’s storm is expected to take until the end of August.
The high winds from the storms brought down power for several hours as well as many trees and branches.
Evergreen Cemetery on Manitowoc’s north side has many closed roads throughout due to damage, and cleanup crews are working to get the cemetery back in shape for the public.
Luke Hennessey, a foreman working on a cleanup crew, told us the damage throughout the city is extensive and may take until the end of August to clean up.
“For sure a couple of weeks, maybe even by the end of August, you never know,” he estimated. “In here, we’re getting there with the big stuff, but all the small stuff is going to take a good two weeks, I’m sure.”
With many trees being down throughout the city, cleanup crews may be working in streets and other public areas.
Hennessey told us that the best thing people can do is to stay out of the way of clean-up crews.
“A big thing, if they come across city workers that are busy removing stuff if they could just stay out of the way,” he said. “In here, we have certain areas blocked off, it was opened yesterday, but the main thing is safety, here and the streets. If they see crews working, I know that they’re curious, but if they could stay away just to make sure they’re not in a crew’s way.”
Emergency brush pick up for the storm began Wednesday, August 9th, though if you missed the pickup on your street, branches and sticks can be brought to the Basswood Road compost site.
