New legislation could change penalties for people who commit traffic offenses.
State Senator Andre Jacque of De Pere argues with his new proposal that many individuals are undeterred by present penalties for repeated hazardous driving.
He explains removing access to a vehicle may be a “necessary consideration”.
The proposal would add an impoundment of up to 90 days for violations that endanger public safety.
These include fleeing from a law enforcement officer, speeding more than 25 miles per hour above the speed limit, racing on a highway, and operating a vehicle without a license more than 3 months after expiration.
The new legislation has been requested by numerous law enforcement officials and has been supported by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), the Wisconsin Professional Police Association, and the Wisconsin Chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police.
