The Manitowoc Police Department often receives complaints that drivers aren’t stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks.
Recently, the department was been able to obtain a pedestrian grant to begin combatting this issue.
Manitowoc Police Chief Nick Reimer explained that a grant like this will be useful.
“It’s very difficult for patrol officers just patrolling regular duty to all of a sudden come upon someone breaking the pedestrian laws,” he noted while on WOMT’s Be My Guest program. “So, we do have an operation in place where we send someone through the crosswalk, and try to do it safely, and if you fail to yield to the person then you’re going to get stopped and receive a citation or written warning. I know that isn’t always fun for the person receiving it, but sometimes it’s just an educational opportunity.”
The Police Chief also noted that he hopes the grant will prove to be beneficial and save lives.
