Some students have already returned to class while others begin next week and that means it’s time to slow down in school zones.
We spoke with Manitowoc Police Captain Jeremy Kronforst who explained what drivers should be on the lookout for within school zones.
“Just be aware that when there’s children present in school zones and that the speed limit drops down to 15 miles per hour,” he said. “Be aware of the crossing guards and if they’re out in a roadway with their stop signs please stop. Do not try going through the intersection while anybody is in the cross walk, including kids or the cross guard.”
It is important to be at your most attentive when you are driving through school zones even when class is in session, because there is always the possibility of a child being around the building.
“School zones are marked for a reason. Children sometimes are impulsive, and they cross the street when they think it’s clear but not look both ways,” the Police Captain noted. “We just want the drivers to be aware, to give them some extra room to make sure we don’t have any car accidents with the kids getting hit.”
With that being said, the police department urges you to be aware of your surroundings when driving, whether you are in a school zone or not.
