Today, August 31st marks a significant date in the history of the creation of Calvary Catholic Cemetery and Chapel Mausoleum in Manitowoc.
Jerry Schermetzler, Family Services Manager at Calvary tells Seehafer News the start of the cemetery, 155 years ago, dates back to the early history of St. Boniface Catholic Church.
“The Manitowoc County Courthouse records show that Henry and Elizabeth Uhrlage on August 31st, 1868, deeded to the congregation of St. Boniface for consideration of $500.00 5 acres of land,” he explained. “This formed the original unit of Calvary Cemetery that is on S. 10th and Viebahn Street as we all know.”
St. Boniface parish followed the 1800-year-old tradition of the catholic church of providing a sacred place for the burial of the faithful.
Calvary Cemetery Association was formed in December of 1924 and present-day, Calvary Cemetery of Manitowoc Inc. maintains 4 catholic cemeteries here and in the township of Newton and all the employees are members of St. Francis of Assisi Parish.
