Sheboygan North built an early lead and then had to hang on for a 24-to-19 victory over Manitowoc Lincoln in an FRCC South Division Football game at Rubick Athletic Field last night.
The Shipbuilders, now 1-and-3 overall, oh-and-2 in conference, scored first on a 28-yard pass play from Max Maigatter to Julien Bailey with 10:19 to go in the opening quarter.
But, the Golden Raiders would force three consecutive turnovers (a fumble and 2 interceptions) and take advantage of a short field on each occasion to score 3 TD’s over a 5-minute span in building a 21-7 advantage after one quarter.
Tyler Konrad’s 22 yard field goal late in the first half gave North a 24-7 lead at intermission.
Then, Lincoln defensive coordinator Ben Ruechel’s unit held the visitors without a point the rest of the way, thanks to a pair of interceptions and a fumble recovery.
Maigatter’s 2nd scoring pass to Bailey, this one from 22 yards away, brought Manitowoc to within 24-13 early in the 3rd period.
The Ships would make the score 24-19 on a 1-yard plunge by the senior signal-caller with 4:44 remaining, but the 2-point conversion try failed.
The Golden Raiders were able to run out the clock and complete their 2nd straight victory after a pair of losses to open the season.
North had a slight edge in total yardage, 310 to 307.
Their quarterback Max Olsen scored a pair of touchdowns from 1 and 3 yards out and wound up with 116 yards on the ground.
Maigatter completed 18 of 26 passes for 163 yards and 2 TD’s while also rushing for 83 yards.
Manitowoc Lincoln travels to Bay Port while Sheboygan North will host Notre Dame next Friday.
