Nic and Megan Kaufmann are leading a fundraiser for their 12-year-old son Elijah, who has recently been diagnosed as a high functioning child with autism.
The family struggled to reach this final diagnosis and battle the previous stereotypical labels that he’s “undisciplined” and “a problem child”.
At his school, Elijah was fortunate enough to meet a now retired therapy dog, who provided him with a calming distraction and an outlet when he was having a hard time.
The family is now partnering with the nonprofit organization 4 Paws for Ability, which specializes in training service dogs for kids with Autism and veterans with PTSD.
However, the cost of training can be very expensive, and the family is looking to raise at least $20,000.
They are reaching out to local businesses and the help of the community.
On Sunday, September 17th, the Kaufmann’s are hosting an event at the Valders Community Center from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
The fundraiser will feature a chicken booyah and hot dog sale, as well as a koozie and t-shirt sale.
There will also be raffles and carnival games. All money raised will benefit Elijah’s journey for a life-changing service dog. Cash donations are accepted, as well as gifts and/or goods that can be raffled off.
