We now know why there was a heavy police presence in a Kaukauna neighborhood yesterday.
According to a statement from the Kaukauna Police Department, an officer was involved in a shooting near the intersection of Joyce and Diedrich Streets at around 8:00 Wednesday evening.
Officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Diedrich Street to look for a juvenile runaway who was believed to be going to the area in a stolen vehicle.
The juvenile arrived with a 28-year-old Oshkosh man driving the car, and officers attempted to make contact.
At some point during the attempted contact, one of the officers fired their weapon, striking the man driving the car.
Officers administered medical aid before the man was taken to a local hospital where he is said to be in stable condition.
The Appleton Police Department has been called in to conduct an independent investigation of the shooting.
The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.
