Manitowoc Lutheran High School is getting ready to start building a new gym.
The school held a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday (September 27th) on the school’s east side where the new gym will be built.
Students from several Manitowoc County Lutheran schools shoveled dirt in front of a stage. MLHS Director of Mission Advancement Kevin Buch says the new building will be a double-stall gym so they can run two sports events side by side with one main court.
There will also be a new set of locker rooms and a new parking lot. Students have been dealing with longer practices because there isn’t enough room to get ready.
Athletic Director Scott Loberger says it really affects the basketball season, especially with the two-weekend tournament the school hosts every year.
“There are three rotations of basketball practices, so players stay until 8:30 to 9 p.m. on any given night,” he explained. Also, when there are home games, the other teams really don’t get the chance to practice so it will be nice to be able to do that and get kids home at a reasonable time.”
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Buch explained that the mission of the school Manitowoc Lutheran uses its God-given gifts to help each student become thoroughly equipped for paths of service to our redeemer.
He says this project will do just that.
“It’s going to be mainly in the physical area,” Buch says.
“It will allow for better practices and a better game day experience.”
Other speakers at the ceremony included Student Body President Logan Brooks and MLHS Campaign Director Martin Plocher.
He says although a lot has been raised for the project, more is needed to complete it and a possible future fitness center.
“There still needs to be some good solid donations,” Plocher explained. “Otherwise, we might need to finish some of it partially because the district is only allowed to borrow so much for it (the project) and they (the school board) need to be responsible.”
Construction on the 30,000-square-foot gym is expected to begin in October.
The project right now is expected to be completed by October next year.
