Built-in-ground and portable fire pits have been added to the city of Manitowoc’s lighting fires ordinance.
Built-in-ground fire pits must be at least 25 feet from a structure, 10 feet from a fence or overhang, have a metal ring not to exceed 3 feet and diameter, and must be surrounded on the outer diameter by non-combustible material like stone or concrete.
Portable fire pits must be at least 10 feet from a structure, and 10 feet from a fence, and owners must follow the manufacturer’s instructions, which could include a spark arrester screen cover.
Other rules include having some way to put out a fire in case it gets out of control and must not cause an issue with neighbors.
You can have your fire-burning privileges revoked if you don’t follow the rules.
