As winter approaches, so does the need for heat in the home.
This does, however, bring some concerns from individuals on what the smell emanating from the furnace is.
We spoke with Cory from Smokey Barbier Heating Inc. on what to anticipate when turning the furnace on for the first time this winter.
“That smell you have coming or radiating out of those registers, what that is that is the dust and dirt and things that accumulate throughout the summer months on those heating elements and in the furnace compartments,” he explained.
“What that is, is that’s starting to burn off because you turned your furnace on for the first time, it is not harmful it is not bad for you to breathe it”.
Cory emphasized the concern homeowners should have for the things they can’t smell carbon monoxide.
“There’s only two ways to know if you have carbon monoxide or if that furnace is operating correctly,” he said.
“One is to have a carbon monoxide detector working in the home on every level with fresh batteries two have a professional come out and take a look at that piece of equipment that furnace or boiler, or space heater and make sure that everything is clean and clear and that its firing safely in that home so that you can turn this equipment on when its needed, and know that it’s going to be safe for your family”.
