Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels says the 2024 executive budget was challenging but rewarding to put together.
He presented his budget during a special council meeting last night (October 24th).
One of the big discussions was about home values and how they went up this year, but he reiterated,“The average property owner who saw about a 30 to 34% increase in their assessed value won’t be paying 30% more in property taxes.”
He also told Seehafer News, “There will be a slight increase and that’s why I listed all the increases we’ll have. So the average citizen might see an increase but if they had a 20% increase in their assessed value they will see a decrease and if it’s more than 40% there will be an increase.”
Other increases in the budget include employee salaries and salt being more expensive.
The city is buying the same amount of salt, but the price has gone up by $60,000.
Nickels also wants to work on several road projects on Franklin and Buffalo Streets plus work on other projects like the Burger Boat Park Pavilion and replace Dock “A” at the Manitowoc Marina.
The Rahr-West Museum would also get a $290,000 roof replacement.
Nickles will have listening sessions on the budget on Monday, November 13th at 10:30 a.m. and Wednesday, November 15th at 5:00 p.m.
The budget could be approved at the city’s next meeting on November 20th.
