An environmental organization is giving $1.4 million in grants for projects along western Lake Michigan areas including in Wisconsin through the Daybreak Foundation.
While most of the project will happen around Milwaukee, the closest project to Manitowoc County will help the Lake Michigan Bird Observatory in Port Washington.
They will get $125,000 to conduct a pilot project to plant over 500 trees in lakeside communities using a special type of super-heated charcoal made from wood debris like yard waste and invasive species removal that can be put in the soil to capture carbon and slow the release of water and nutrients to trees, increasing their growth and survival rate.
Other projects include helping an alpaca grazing area, creating a plan for neighborhood tree planting on Milwaukee’s northside, and more agroforestry on the Western Lake Michigan Basin.
The foundation’s goal is to fund projects that create solutions for climate change.
