Manitowoc County’s budget was approved.
The county board voted unanimously to pass it, although there were five people absent.
The county has a $93 million budget with a $32 million tax levy.
County Executive Bob Ziegelbauer says this is a conservative budget that doesn’t raise taxes but should go down a little for the individual property owner.
One of the most aggressive projects the county will do is County Trunk R, or Rapids Rd, from Waldo Blvd to County Trunk P.
Ziegelbauer says inflation was a big obstacle in creating the budget.
“We had to take into account the inflation that we feel now and into the future,” he described. “That’s just one more challenge to having a county budget but I hope that the inflation will moderate in the future.”
Another issue the county dealt with was an increase in health insurance costs for county employees.
County Finance Committee Chairman Biff Hansen says although they are going up, it’s a lot less than what was originally proposed.
No money from the 2024 budget is going toward remodeling the Manitowoc County Courthouse dome, HVAC, or window replacement. although there seemed to be a notion that there was.
