The 2024 General Election is less than a year away and both Republicans and Democrats are getting ready.
Both major political parties see their side as the clear winners in the upcoming elections at the local, state, and federal levels. Manitowoc County Republican Party Chair Don Zimmer says he’s confident that Republicans can win the White House.
When it comes to President Joe Biden, Zimmer told Seehafer News, “I don’t think he is going to be the nominee. That puts the Democrats in a tricky position because what are they going to do with Kamla Harris, who doesn’t have dementia but is not a very intelligent woman.”
The last Marquette University Pole done showed Biden ahead by two points in Wisconsin if he faced presumed Republican Presidential Nominee Donald Trump.
Wisconsin Democratic Party Communications Director Joe Oslund says Biden can win a second term, especially with what’s happened with Democratic ideals like having legal abortions winning in red states like Ohio.
“I think the president and the vice president have a great record to run on,” he explains. “I think they’ve achieved a lot in terms of the bipartisan infrastructure law and other legislative agreements. We know how to win here; we’ve done it consistently.”
At the state level and specifically, Manitowoc County, Zimmer says Republican support is very strong for politicians like Congressman Glenn Grothman.
He doesn’t want to be overly optimistic, but he thinks “they will easily retain their seat.”
Oslund says Democrats should have somebody running against Grothman because it’s good to have an alternative plus he says Grothman hasn’t kept his promise saying he would limit how many times he would run for Congress.
But it’s not as easy for Democrats at the state level, especially with how the state maps are drawn.
“We all known that the maps are drawn in such a way that folks can stay in office,” he explained. “It’s where politicians get to pick their voters and not the other way around as we know it all should be.”
At a citywide level, Zimmer says the Manitowoc Republicans will be looking at some seats on the county board and school board.
Oslund says Democrats are waiting for their day in court for a district map change.
