Scammers are at it again, this time in Calumet County.
The Sheriff’s Office is reporting that fraudsters have been contacting residents in the County, claiming to be able to lower their utility bills.
Some residents have been victimized and have lost money, but authorities are having trouble making any arrests because the scammers are operating outside of the U.S.
Citizens have reported receiving calls from individuals claiming to be with Wisconsin Public Service who offer a 30% reduction in heating bills.
What makes the scam seem legitimate is that the caller I.D. will sometimes show up as WPS, and the recordings they use sound real.
On occasion, the scammer will threaten to disconnect power or demand immediate payment, both of which are red flags.
As always, if you receive a call from a company, the jail, or law enforcement that seems odd in any way, hang up and call the number listed on that entity’s official website.
If the call is legitimate, they will help you. If not, report the scam attempt to your local law enforcement agency with as much detail as possible.
